Girl went home from school in floods of tears after being told her trousers were too tight

King James's School, Almondbury, Huddersfield

A schoolgirl went home in floods of tears after being told her trousers were too tight.
Other pupils were left feeling they were dressing too “provocatively” after sitting through an assembly at King James’s School in Almondbury, Huddersfield.
One furious parent branded the approach as "disgusting" after her daughter came home from school crying.
The school has since sent a letter to parents saying: "Some tight styles of trousers, that may have been over-looked this year, will no longer be permitted.”
A mother, who has two daughters at the school and wanted to remain anonymous told the Huddersfield Examiner : “One of my daughters came home in tears.
“They are right to have a uniform policy, however how they have made the girls to feel like this is disgusting.
Apparently the tight trousers are provocative to the boys. What does this tell the girls?
“If they go out for a night out in a short skirt and they are attacked, is it their own fault for what they are wearing?”

The letter sent to parents says: “We are very proud of our high standards at King James’s School and uniform is no exception.
"The vast majority of our students are extremely well presented, a fact which is often noted by visitors to the school, and this is something that we are very keen to maintain.
“During the summer holidays, you may well be replacing certain items of your child’s school uniform.

"We recognise that this can often be a difficult process, as shops frequently brand various items as school uniform that are clearly not suitable for that purpose.
“Therefore, in an attempt to avoid any confusion over what is and what is not acceptable at King James’s School and in order to avoid, as a consequence, any unnecessary upset at the start of the school year, here is a polite reminder our uniform expectations.”

It lists acceptable uniform covering all clothing, plus jewellery, hair and make up, and then adds: “We are aware that in some cases a little more detail may help clarify understanding.
“Jeans/jean-style, combat trousers, track suit bottoms, skinny/tight fitting trousers are not acceptable; some tight styles of trousers, that may have been over-looked this year, will no longer be permitted.”
It also lists a number of shops in Huddersfield which sell appropriate trousers, including a price for each item, and outlines what styles the shops are selling which are not acceptable.
“We recognise that getting hold of some items of school wear can at times be challenging, particularly girls’ trousers.

"In order to assist you in this process, therefore, we have located a number of possible sources in Huddersfield.”
The school declined to comment.
